Thrifting Haul

I really need to remember to grab a basket as soon as I enter a thrift store. It never fails. I end up carrying an armful of stuff so high I can barely see over it, trying to make my way back to the baskets. When will I learn?

Apparently not today! But my armful of stuff included some pretty great finds.

I got chewed out by a Goodwill employee over this, but it was worth it. I guess it's against their rules to "dig in the bins" as he rudely told me. In my defense though, it was sitting on top; I didn't dig. It's a beauty of a bird cage and is probably over 3' tall. And to make it even better, it's an actual bird cage, not just for decor. Luckily for you, I took this picture after cleaning up all the gross stuff in the bottom.

My mom found this sweet owl for me. When she gave him to me, he was entirely black. I've still got some cleaning to do, but I love him already. I don't know if I'll be able to sell him. This is how hoarding begins, isn't it?

I found this little wood German calendar buried under a pile of picture frames. Thankfully it suffered no damage! I love the sweet little flowers painted on top. And everyone needs a German calendar, right? Ja!

Next to the wood calendar was this little brass one. It's a 40 year calendar made in the 1950s. You can spin the middle section to find out what day of the week any date was. It's pretty cool and I absolutely love little interesting things like this.

But my favorite find of the day was this one. It was leaning against the wall behind a bunch of framed posters. My initial thought was that it was just a quaint piece of art, but when I pulled it out, I discovered the hinged sides.

It's a pretty old sewing caddy. Or cabinet. Frankly, I have no clue what it's actually called. But it has spaces for spools of thread, bits of fabric, and more. I couldn't find any exact matches online, but I did find a few similar pieces on Etsy. I think it could be from the 1940s or earlier, but I'm not sure. After a wipe-down of the wood and a lint roller to remove the dust, it's in great vintage shape. It's so unique and I love it! It's going to be hard to see it go.

What are some great thrifting finds you have found lately? Be sure to share!

    1. You sound just like me describing it to my mom! "It's this sewing... thing." That's a good enough description for a price tag, right?

  2. Gotta love a sweet 'sewing thing', handy, in great shape, and could even be used as a low screen.

  4. If I don't grab a cart, the same thing happens to me. But if I do grab one, then I find NOTHING and have to put back an empty cart. So normally, I don't grab one:-)

    Love love love the birdcage!!

    1. It's hilarious that you said this, because I had horrible luck thrifting today every time I grabbed a cart. Then I stopped at one last store that I've never had luck in, skipped getting a cart, and ended up with an armful! I think I'm going to be a little superstitious now and skip the cart on purpose!

  5. I never EVER get a cart it's--I consider it bad luck to ASSUME I'll find anything :)
